The City of Bath averages around 110 juvenile arrests per year. They have gone from a high of 149 in 2001, to 109 in 2011, which is the time the Park has operated. The hours between 3pm and 8pm are the most vulnerable for our kids. If they don’t have alternatives, such as the Park, then they are more likely to participate in bad behavior. It costs over $100,000 dollars to house a juvenile in the Longcreek Juvenile Detention Facility in South Portland.
That is the bad news! But we as a community have always stepped up and did what we thought best for our youth. The Bath Meetinghouse and Skatepark is one example. It offers a safe haven for our youth, exercise for our skaters and bikers, and nurturing for everyone! Our new location at the Armory, next to the Bath Middle School, will enhance our mission to great lengths. Bath is a community and this project will prove what a great community we are! We either decide to pay now, or we may pay significantly later.
